Youth Drug And Alcohol Deterrence (YDAD)

Involved in alternative sentencing options for more than 30 years, OneOC implemented YDAD in 1986 with the help of concerned doctors, hospitals, law enforcement, and the courts. Over 45,000 participants have successfully completed this course. This model program has been showcased in television newscasts and replicated in many counties across the US. It is available to both youth and adults in two program options.

Youth Drug And Alcohol Deterrence helps participants learn from the mistakes of others rather than making their own over and over again. YDAD offers participants unique insights into the effects of alcohol and drugs on their lives, and shows them the real-life consequences of their choices. The curriculum is comprised of 4 components, 3 classes; Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Sheriff Coroner Morgue presentation, a visit to a local hospital trauma unit at night and an 1,000 word essay. Classes are held year round every month.

The community has experienced a reduction in DUI accidents, arrests and re-arrests, fatalities and ER visits. Since its inception, YDAD has been instrumental in reducing the recidivism rate from over 35% down to 1.4%. Orange County has experienced a 21% drop in drivers age 21 and up involved in drug and alcohol-related fatal and injury crashes and a 22% drop among drivers 15-20. YDAD saves lives.

Anyone can sign up and participate in YDAD without a court order; parent/guardian referrals and self-referrals are welcome.

I learned a lot from the YDAD program that I never learned even in rehab.  I had always ignored any sign that I had a problem but this made me want to change myself, even if I had barely any problem at all, it was still a problem, and I realized how much I really love life and everyone around me.  Nothing at all is worth losing the life I love so dearly.  If it weren’t for the YDAD program I would not have made such a positive change in my life today.
