The next OneOC Day of Service is just around the corner… Thursday September 11th, 2014!
Now in it’s 4th year hosted by OneOC, this national service day honors the lives impacted by the events on September, 11, 2001, focused on “Remembrance through Service.” Throughout this month of compassion, OneOC sponsors county-wide service projects and toolkits that engage volunteers of all ages, as well as support our troops, veterans, and disaster preparedness, benefiting all of our American heroes. Since 2011, over 7500 Orange County volunteers have participated in this national initiative in collaboration with OneOC.

Saturday, September 6th
Violette Elementary School – Garden Grove 9am-12pm FULL
Education (Veterans) – Senator Correa’s Young Senator volunteers will partner with Orange County Veterans to paint a U.S. Map on the school blacktop. Additionally Veterans will be honored with a special lunch celebration, sponsored by Stone Fire Grill.
Wednesday, September 10th
Strength In Support – Dana Point 9am-10pm
Safety Net (Veterans) – SIS provides counseling, mentorship and educational workshops to military and family members, including non-active, reserve, guard, or veterans, addressing their challenges in a timely, competent, and supportive manner. Volunteers will assist event staff at the Monarch Beach Golf Links.
- 9am-4pm– Assist with event set-up, registration and day-of-event logistics. Please note: Times can be split into smaller shifts, as below.
- 8:30am-12:30pm – Assist with event set-up and registration.
- 12pm-4pm – Assist with day-of-event logistics and auction set-up.
- 6pm-10pm – Assist with the dinner with Veterans in memory of 9/11, provided by St. Regis and charity auction.
Thursday, September 11th
School Gardens – Countywide 9am-11pm
Education/Health & Wellness — The “OneOC Service-Learning School Garden Project” provides an on-going opportunity for schools to meet CA Standards-based Life Science goals, while giving the students a chance to provide meaningful service to their community and produce will benefit families in need including clients from Second Harvest Food Bank.
- 9am-11am – Volunteers will build new raised bed gardens including design, ground preparation, protection and supplies for the Fall.
- Circle View – Huntington Beach
- Culverdale – Irvine
- 9am-11am - Volunteers will refurbish vegetable garden areas by repairing and staining current raised beds and amend soil for Fall.
- Clara Barton – Anaheim
- Eastshore – Irvine

- Sun View – Ocean View

South County Outreach – Irvine 2-4:30pm
Safety Net (Hunger) – SCO helps to prevent hunger and homelessness and provides individuals, families and seniors in crisis with the tools that help them help themselves, companies are encouraged to host their own food drive (click on flyer) prior to service day. Volunteers will help sort food, restock shelves, bag rice, beans and dry soup, and pack toiletry kits.
Giving Children Hope – Buena Park 9am-12pm
Health & Wellness (Disaster Preparedness)– GCH provides sustainable hope through wellness programs and disaster response through the gathering and distribution of…Basic Needs, Nutritional Foods & Medical Resources.
- 9am-12pm – Volunteers will pack nutritious foods into backpacks to distribute to elementary students identified as homeless.
- 9am-12pm – Volunteers will sort a variety of in-kind donations for the distribution center to be available to other nonprofits in need.
- 9am-12pm – Volunteers will identify and organize medical donations and prepare them for shipment.
Patriots and Paws – Orange 9am-1pm
Safety Net (Veterans) – P&P helps Veterans, active Military and their immediate families with free home furnishings, and unite them with a rescued animal. Volunteers will be helping at the warehouse organizing furnishings and assisting directly with clients to select and load furnishings to take with them. Please note: On this day, volunteers will not be assisting with the rescued animals, as the rescued animals are located at a local shelter that partners with P&P.
Veterans First – Anaheim 10am-2pm
Safety Net (Veterans)— VF provides services exclusively to our region’s homeless and at-risk veterans. Volunteers will help improve outdoor facilities at a local group home including installing a new U.S. flag pole, repairing property fencing. Additionally Veterans will be honored with a special lunch celebration, sponsored by StoneFire Grill.
SeniorServ – Countywide 12-1pm (unless noted below)
Safety Net (Seniors) — SS improves the quality of life for older adults, persons with disabilities and their families by creating a safety net of health, nutrition and supportive services designed to enhance their independence, well being and dignity. Volunteer leaders will assist seniors with arts & crafts projects, making “Appreciation Cards” for local public safety (police, fire & lifeguards) & our military Heroes.

Safety Net (Veterans) – OCRM feeds, clothes, shelter, heal & empower the less fortunate. Volunteers will be assembling hygiene kits for Veterans that are staying at the facility and attending the Orange County Stand Down.
Think Together – Countywide 2:30-5:30pm
Education— TT creates opportunities for all kids to discover their passions and reach their full potential. Volunteers in teams of 5+ will work at local school sites with students as part of the after-school program to refurbish books as part of the “Book Doctor” program, focused on early literacy.

Friday, September 12th
Goodwill of Orange County – Santa Ana 4pm-7pm
Safety Net (Veterans) – GWOC serves over 1,000 children and adults with disabilities including their new “Enduring Independence Veterans Program”. Volunteers will assist Veteran clients at the 2014-2015 Veteran Leader Corps “Job Readiness Kick-off Dinner” StoneFire Grill and will set-up, distribute program materials, serve dinner as well as clean-up. Additionally companies can also set-up as a vendor to promote job postings to Veteran attendees, sponsored by.
Saturday, September 13th
Earthroots – Silverado 9am-12pm
Environment/Education (Disaster Preparedness)—Volunteers will work with Earthroots staff on their newly acquired outdoor educational acreage assisting with fire protection and habitat restoration efforts at a wilderness site (bus transportation to and from location is included).

Sunday, September 14th, 1-2:30pm
Family Service Teams provide children and their families with a simple and organized way of building volunteerism into family life. Working together, families have fun while learning about the importance of giving their time, talent and energy to make a difference in Orange County. Home Depot Foundation Celebration of Service – Southern California
Since 2011 the Home Depot Foundation has tried to ensure that every veteran has a safe place to call home, as part of the “Celebration of Service” campaign. This year OneOC will be partnering with Furnishing Hope and Veterans of Foreign Wars, to assist wounded warriors as well as veteran homeowners with home renovations including gardening, landscaping, grab bars, wheelchair ramps and more. Compassion Games – Countywide
September 11th – 21st
Inspired by 2008 TED Talk Prize Winner Karen Armstrong, who launched a Charter for Compassion, “Compassion Games” issues a challenge of service from 9/11 through the international day of peace 9/21, sponsored in Orange County by S.A.R.A.H. For more information go to http://compassiongames.org/.
4th Annual Orange County Stand Down – Tustin
September 25th – 28th
Safety Net—Volunteers will assist Veterans First with the fourth annual Orange County Stand Down. This two day event provides the region’s homeless and low income veterans as well as their families, access basic services, bond with their fellow veterans and start rebuilding lives. Day, evening and night shifts are available beginning with volunteers setting-up on Thursday 9/25 through Sunday 9/28, Veterans preferred!
